Words matter. They connect concepts to ideas, and ideas to knowledge. The minds behind Scholastic believe that every child should understand the words they use—that the vocabulary they acquire will empower them to become literate, expressive, and independent thinkers of tomorrow. That’s why they created W.O.R.D.— Words Open Reading Doors—a new program for Grades K-5 that builds students’ knowledge of core vocabulary and expands the world around them.
Grounded in research, Scholastic W.O.R.D. makes learning new words fun. Students progress independently through a game-based, guided program with exciting activities and compelling passages. W.O.R.D. includes ten themes, each purposefully designed to build core bodies of knowledge and support other elements of the classroom curriculum, such as science and social studies.
Each theme begins with a placement activity to personalize the path for each student and ensures that all students are introduced to the same core vocabulary—but at the appropriate text level. For educators, they can use W.O.R.D.’s reporting dashboard to monitor student progress and receive actionable data to inform instruction.
Purposefully designed to be used anytime, anywhere, and on any device, Scholastic W.O.R.D. can also be accessed at home. Using their personalized accounts, students pick up wherever they left off, continuing to make measurable progress developing vocabulary skills. With W.O.R.D., educators can trust that students are developing a solid foundation of the words needed to succeed in literacy and life.
